This topic provides a summary of available upgrade paths to Windows You can upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or a later operating system. This includes upgrading from one release of Windows 10 to later release of Windows Migrating from one edition of Windows 10 to a different edition of the same release is also supported. These methods require that you input a license or product key for the new Windows edition prior to starting the upgrade process. This issue was corrected in the Windows 10 LTSC release, which only allows data-only and clean install options. Upgrade is supported using the in-place upgrade process using Windows setup. You will need to use the Product Key switch if you want to keep your apps.

If you don't use the switch, the option Keep personal files and apps option is grayed out. Select Download and install updates recommended on the first screen and then Next. Read over the license terms and click Accept in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

The Ready to Install screen should appear. Select Install to begin. Your computer will begin restarting at this point multiple times. Wait for the Upgrading Windows screen to complete. Once your computer reboots, select your correct user and then click Next. On the Let's get connected screen, choose the Wi-Fi connection of your choice eduroam on campus to continue.

On the New apps for the new Windows screen, click Next. Windows will continue finishing the installation.

I have managed to make the upgrade but it required reinstalling the OEM licensed version of Win 8 Pro, using a tool to interrogate the bios for the original key, activating that version then installing Windows 10 Pro.
